James Seery enlisted into the 73rd Foot on 27 March 1837, and reached the rank of Quartermaster-Sergeant in the 73rd. He served at the Cape of Good Hope for 13 years 5 months, including the Kaffir War of 1850-53. He was discharged ‘Free’ from the 73rd on 9 May 1853, and served in the Cape Mounted Riflemen until discharged to pension on 7 August 1860. He is shown in Everson’s roll of the C.M.R. as Sergeant (Orderly Room Clerk).
