Griqualand West Shooting Medal, in the form of a Maltese Cross with laurel wreath between arms, 33mm, silver (hallmarks for Birmingham 1900), the obverse central roundel engraved ‘G.W.’, the reverse engraved ‘II. P.F.C. R. Saunders 1899’, good very fine £60-£80
Attributed to Private R. Saunders, Kimberley Volunteer Regiment, who was killed in action in the relief of Mafeking, 17 May 1900.
Note: Saunders’ Queen’s South Africa Medal, with clasps for Relief of Mafeking, Defence of Kimberley, and Orange Free State, sold in these rooms in March 2011.
