Henry Jones was born in Deptford, Kent, in 1866, and attested for the Royal West Kent Regiment at Woolwich on 8 October 1884. He served with the Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War from 16 March 1900 to 4 November 1902 (entitled to the Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Transvaal, and Wittebergen, and the King’s South Africa Medal with both date clasps), and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 68 of 1903. He was discharged on 30 April 1908, after 23 years and 206 days’ service. He subsequently re-enlisted for service during the Great War on 21 October 1914, and served at the Depot at home, being appointed Lance-Corporal on 3 October 1916.
