John Kettle was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, and attested for the 80th Foot in July 1870. He served with the Regiment in Perak, and also in South Africa (entitled to S.A. 1877-79 Medal with ‘1878-9’ clasp). Kettle was discharged 21 August 1882.
