Edward Williams, a native of Widnes, served with the 2nd Lancashire Volunteer Battalion Royal Engineers, and served in South Africa on attachment to the 6th Company Royal Engineers, earning 5 confirmed clasps with this unit: Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, South Africa 1901, and South Africa 1902. It is possible he may have earned other clasps with another unit with a different service number before joining this unit.
He later served as a Sapper during the Great War.
