The roll confirms John Butt as an Ordinary Seaman aboard the
Volontaire for the boat service action in the Bay of Rosas on 1 November 1809, when a French convoy of five warships and various merchant vessels was captured or destroyed. One other man of this name is shown on the roll as a Landsman aboard the Prince at Trafalgar.
