East India Company, Bengal Presidency, Benares Mint: Second phase, silver Half-Rupee in the name of ‘Shah ‘Alam II (1173-1221h/1759-1806), 1227h, frozen yrs 17/49 [1812-13], sikka zad bar haft kishwar saya fazl ilah hami din muhammad shah alam badshah [defender of the religion of Muhammad, Shah ‘Alam emperor, shadow of the divine favour, put his stamp on the seven climes], fish (with barbels) and sun symbols, differentiating or darogah mark N, rev. zarb muhammadabad banaras sanah 49 julus maimanat manus [struck at Muhammadabad Benares in the 49th year of his reign of tranquil prosperity], 5.24g/11h (Prid. 281 [not in Sale]; Stevens –; KM. 37 [date not listed]). Some light surface tooling and has been pierced, otherwise good fine, exceptionally rare, the date clear and previously unpublished [certified and graded NGC VF Details: Holed] £200-£400
