Military General Service 1793-1814, 3 clasps, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Toulouse (M. Smith, Lieut. 40th Foot) very fine £600-800
Michael Smith was appointed to the 44th Foot, without purchase, on 29 August, 1811, and later that same year transferred to the 40th Foot. He was promoted Lieutenant, again without purchase, on 23 August, 1813, just after the fighting in the Pyrenees. The regimental history states that he was wounded at the battle of Toulouse, although his pension papers state that he was wounded at Pampeluna in 1813, whilst still an Ensign, for which he received a pension of £50 per annum.
