XVIII: Cast Copies, Restrikes and Electrotypes of Medals, Naval Reward, 1653, a uniface lead restrike of the reverse, 18th century, unsigned (by T. Simon), naval battle scene within full trophy border, the back with paper label inscribed ‘Blake – Medal was struck by Simon by order of Oliver Cromwell to commemorate the battle & Victory over Van Tromp which was gained by 60 men of war agt. 70 anno 1653, this medal was sold to King William 4th for £150 out of the collection of Mr R.L.’, 56 x 51mm, 65.27g (Lessen, BNJ 1997, pp.58-9, Trophy Large Border, and pl. vi, 2, this piece; cf. Platt II, p.336, type EE; cf. M.I. I, 398/26). Die crack through ships, very fine, interesting £150-£200

This and the next item were struck from the original Simon die, probably before 1791, when it was acquired by the British Museum. Sold with a paper roundel (Lessen, BNJ 1997, pl. vii, 4, this item)
