William Brown attested for the Wiltshire Regiment and served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War. The medal roll shows him as being entitled to the two clasps and that he ‘returned to England, 7 July 1900.’ During the Great War he served in the 2nd Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, and at some point transferred back to the Wiltshire Regiment, being re-numbered 21006, and again later transferred to the Royal Engineers.
