Sergeant W.E. Burchmore was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, London Gazette, 11 March, 1916. His exceptional citation reads: 'For conspicuous bravery, when, although wounded, he continued to serve his gun. On the following day he was again severely wounded, but refused to leave his post until, later in the day, his foot was crushed by the trail of the gun, and he was unable to continue his duties. Throughout the operations he afforded a splendid example of courage and self-sacrifice.'
