Alfred William Dewberry was born at St. Pancras, London, and attested for the East Surrey Regiment at Woolwich, Kent. He served initially with them during the Great War on the Western Front before transferring to the Royal Fusiliers, and was killed in action whilst serving with the 13th Battalion on 11 April 1917. He is buried in Monchy British Cemetery, Monchy-le-Preux, France.
