Rawlins], half-length armoured figure three-quarters left, holding sword and wearing sash around waist, hand from heaven holding sword horizontally above head, the sword of the lord and of gydeon, rev. in the multitude of counsellors there is peace, view of both Houses of Parliament, with King and Speaker, 40 x 31mm, 10.61g (Platt II, p.81, type C [C1, this item]; MI I, 296/114). This medal was issued in gold and silver, to be given to persons of various ranks in Essex's army. Though the army was fighting against the King he is represented upon his throne, and Essex declared "I do promise in the sight of Almighty God, that I shall undertake nothing but what shall tend to the advancement of the true Protestant Religion, the security of his Majesty's royal person, the maintenance of the just privileges of Parliament and the liberty and property of the subject."
