Maurice Twemlow Nunnerley was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers. He served in the 4th (Reserve) Battalion and from 1916 onwards in the 18th Battalion, serving during the Great War on the Western Front from June 1916. He was appointed Adjutant of the 18th Battalion on 19 August 1916, was promoted Lieutenant on 1 July 1917, and was awarded the Military Cross in January 1918. He subsequently assumed temporary command of the 18th Battalion, with the rank of temporary Captain, and was wounded in action near Zillebeke on 1 October 1918.
