South African Reserve Bank, obverse and reverse archival photograph showing a proposed design for an unknown £1, Pretoria, 1 January 1922, serial number 0000000, obverse portrait of General Lois Botha at top centre, reverse view of Cape Town, mounted on board, manuscript date 2/6/21, unique and important £400-£500
Lois Botha was a General in the Boer War and considered a Boer war hero, taking command of all Boer forces in 1900. He was appointed the first prime minister of the Union of South Africa in 1907, the forerunner of the modern South African state. One can assume Lois Botha’s portrait wouldn’t have been the most popular choice politically.
