Frederick Jeffries was born in Southampton, Hampshire. He attested for the the Hampshire Regiment at Winchester in January 1900, and served with the Regiment in South Africa, March 1901 - May 1902. Jeffries advanced to Sergeant in October 1901, and was discharged on 12 June 1902, after 2 years and 40 days service with the Colours.
