A collection of four 19th century memorial rings, all detailed with a black enamel band reading ‘IN MEMORY OF’; the first inscribed ‘Sir Robert Macreth, died 6 Feb 1819 aged 94’, 18ct gold, maker’s mark ‘JG’, hallmarked for London 1819; the second, 18ct gold, inscribed ‘Tho.s Paget died 18th Dec.r 1843 Aged 79 years’, hallmarked for London 1828; the third, 9ct gold, inscribed ‘Grandfather 1908’, maker’s mark ‘WGM’, hallmarked for Chester 1900; the fourth, 18ct gold, inscribed ‘My Father Died Dec 24th 1890 aged 75’, hallmarked for London 1890, ring sizes T (leading edge), O½, O and P respectively. £400-£600
Sir Robert Mackreth (?1725–1819), of Ewhurst, Hampshire, was an English club owner, money-lender, speculator and politician. He was a Member of Parliament for Castle Rising between 1774 -1784, and for Ashburton from 1784 - 1802.
