Reginald Binnington was born in Liverpool around 1893. An assistant draper, he attested for the Royal Horse Artillery at Manchester on 6 July 1911 and served in the Frontier Regions of India from 15 September 1915. Advanced Corporal, he likely served with “M” Battery as this was the sole Battery of the Royal Horse Artillery to remain in India throughout the Great War. Equipped with six quick-firing 13-pounders, the Battery witnessed extensive service on the North-West Frontier and mobilised with the 1st (Risalpur) Cavalry Brigade in May 1919 in anticipation of the Third Anglo-Afghan War.
