Henry Edwards was born in Holmer, Hereford, on 14 August 1855 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy First Class on 1 January 1873. He served in H.M.S. Orontes from 20 February 1878 to 1 August 1881, and was promoted Able Seaman on 1 July 1878. He was shore discharged, time expired, on 23 August 1883.
