James Daniel Dempsey was commissioned into the Canadian Forces and served with the 58th Battalion, Canadian Infantry during the Great War on the Western Front. He was mortally wounded on Vimy Ridge on 12 April 1917; captured and taken prisoner of War, he died in captivity two days later on 14 April 1917. He is buried in Douai Communal Cemetery, France.
