Sydney Smith was born in Southampton in 1882 and attested for the Hampshire Regiment at Portsmouth on 17 February 1902, having previously served in the Regiment’s 3rd Volunteer Battalion. He served with the Volunteer Company, 2nd Battalion, in South Africa during the Boer War from 8 March to 31 July 1902, and was discharged on 30 August 1902.
