Ernest Knill was born in Barnstaple, Devon, and attested for the Royal Artillery in February 1898. He served with the 19th Battery, Royal Field Artillery during the Second Boer War, and the latter were engaged at Venter’s Spruit and Spion Kop from 19 to 24 January 1900. Knill died of pneumonia in India on 18 July 1902.
