A rare 16th century silver vervel or hawking ring, the shield-shaped bezel finely engraved with the Royal coat of arms of England and France, quartered, comprising (clockwise) the lions of England and three fleur-de-lis of France, the hoop engraved to the exterior in capitals ‘I.BRI’, diameter 8mm, shield 9mm. £1,000-£1,500
This vervel was found in 1993 in Essex.
The Royal arms are those of Queen Elizabeth I, but the inscription appears to relate to King James of Britain.
