An early 17th century silver vervel or hawking ring, the annular ring inscribed in capitals, +AMBROS* +PVDSE.. *, diameter 14mm, width 3mm, depth 1mm. £600-£800
The vervel was found on 4 December 2022 at Hambleton, North Yorkshire and recorded as Treasure case number 2023T303.
Ambrose Pudsey was christened on 2 October 1595 in Bolton Castle, Yorkshire. His father was William Pudsey, his mother Elizabeth Roxby. He married in 1615 and had a son and two daughters. He died in 1629. The family were known to be Catholic recusants and Royalists and were stripped of their landholdings after the English Civil War.
