Despite a mintage of 182,000 for the year 1892, a large number of these coins were melted down before entering circulation - along with almost the entire allocation of 1893 Centavos that had already been struck. This followed an 1892 decision by the Central American mint in San Salvador to re-establish the Peso as the Salvadorian Colón, in honour of the 400th Anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ first voyage to the Americas.
