A rare type of Pompey’s, this coin commemorates his military achievements, specifically the wars against the Mediterranean pirates and Mithradates of Pontus, as illustrated by the eagle, imagery associated with the land and sky, and a dolphin, the sea. Sear notes that many examples of this type, and other types bearing this obverse type, are likely contemporary forgeries, making this coin particularly desirable.
