The Honourable Walter Dashwood Sclater-Booth was born in London on 15 February 1869, the son of the 1st Lord Basing. Educated at Wellington College and the R.M.A., Woolwich, he was appointed to a commission in the Royal Artillery on 23 July 1887. Raised Major on 4 April 1903, he served in command of ‘L’ Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, during the Retreat from Mons and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order for his leadership on 24 August 1914 near Audriegnes. He later fought at the Battle of Nery on 1 September 1914, witnessing three men under his command win the Victoria Cross for valour against overwhelming forces; wounded in action, Sclater-Booth returned to England to recover and was later appointed Commandant of the R.H. and R.F.A. School of Instruction at Lynd on 18 May 1915. Created a C.B. in June, 1917, and C.M.G. In January, 1918, he was raised Colonel on 30 October 1918 and retired with the honorary rank of Brigadier-General in November 1919.
