A Great War C.B.E., pre-War M.V.O. group of five awarded to Captain J. A. Webster, Royal Navy, who served as Director of Navigation, Hydrographic Department, during the Great War

(Military) Commander’s 1st type neck badge, silver-gilt and enamel, with short section of neck riband for display purposes; The Royal Victorian Order, M.V.O., Member’s 4th Class breast badge, silver-gilt, gold, and enamel, the reverse officially numbered ‘615’; 1914-15 Star (Capt. J. A. Webster, R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (Capt. J. A. Webster. R.N.) mounted as worn; together with the recipient’s related miniature awards, these similarly mounted, nearly extremely fine (5) £500-£700

John Alexander Webster was born on 23 November 1874 and joined the Royal Navy on 15 July 1887. He was promoted Lieutenant on 14 October 1895, and Commander on 31 December 1907, and was appointed a Member IV Class of the Royal Victorian Order whilst serving in H.M.S. Indomitable on the occasion of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales’s visit to Quebec. Promoted Captain on 31 December 1914, he served during the Great War as Captain of H.M.S. Motagua from 14 January 1915 to 27 July 1916, before being appointed Director of Navigation, Hydrographic Department, on 8 August 1916, holding this post for the rest of the War. Appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1919 Birthday Honours’ List, he was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 19 May 1922, and died on 24 June 1924.
