Harry Westlake was born in Exeter on 23 August 1869 and served in the Rifle Brigade from 9 September 1885 to 8 September 1906, including overseas service as Colour Sergeant during the South African campaign from 28 October 1899 to 23 May 1900, and later on the island of Malta. Discharged to pension, he rejoined the Colours at York on 1 May 1911 and served with the 5th West Yorkshire Regiment as Quartermaster Sergeant from 1 April 1915. Posted to France 13 April 1915, he returned home and was granted a commission in the 3/4th Battalion, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry on 23 August 1915, being promoted Lieutenant on 1 September 1916 and Captain on 6 October 1916. He resigned his commission on 9 February 1921.
