Royal Humane Society, large bronze medal (unsuccessful) (Robt. Henry Tilley 23. Aug. 1861) fitted with small ring suspension, nearly extremely fine £200-£240
R.H.S. Case no. 16,758: ‘Robert Henry Tilley, a Shipbroker from Parkstone, Poole, attempted to save the life of George Whitfield, a 19 year old clerk from Saffron Walden, Essex, who had been carried by the surf beyond his depth whilst bathing in Durlston Bay, Swanage, on 23 August 1861. Tilley swam to his assistance but through the violence of the sea could not save him.’
