Clifford Mayers was born in March 1921, and enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1938. He advanced to Sergeant, and was commissioned Pilot Officer (on probation) in January 1944. Mayers advanced to Flying Officer in July 1944, and to Flight Lieutenant in January 1946. He relinquished his emergency commission on enlistment in the R.A.F. in January 1951, and appears to have recommenced airman service in the rank of Flight Sergeant. Mayers was promoted Master Pilot in March 1953, and was commissioned for a second time in the rank of Flying Officer in April 1955. He served as a pilot with 210 Squadron (Lancasters and Neptunes) from 1951 to 1954. Mayers was subsequently posted to 187 Squadron, and then to R.A.F. Benson in August 1957. He advanced to Flight Lieutenant in April 1958, and retired in July 1968. Thus creating an unusual group to a pilot with two spells of service in the ranks, and two spells as an officer.
