Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Downing was born in May 1865, commissioned into the 2nd Brigade, South Irish Division Garrison Artillery, September 1882; Lieutenant, 4th battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, May 1885; Captain, June 1894; Major, March 1904; Adjutant, March 1897 to March 1903; placed on the retired list on completion of his period of service, 7 June 1914; recalled as Lieutenant Colonel, commanding the 7th battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, 19 August 1914; Brigade Commander and Temporary Brigadier General, 18 March 1916; Mentioned in Despatches
