Only 9 medical orderlies received the clasp for Elandslaagte. In 1905 he married Alice Mary Sadler, who had served during the Boer War at No. 3 General Hospital, Springfontein. Commissioned in July 1916 as Lieutenant and Quarter Master, he served in France with the 5th Field Ambulance, and ended the War as a Captain.
