James West was born in the Parish of St Thomas, Bridgetown, Barbados, and enlisted for the West India Regiment in August 1890. He was a carpenter by trade but also played the clarinet and served as a Bandsman in the regiment. He served in West Africa from January 1892 to February 1895, during which period he took part in the 1892 expeditions to the Tambaka Country, and the capture of Tambi on 7 April, and to the Gambia for the capture of Toniataba on 25 April. During 1893-4 he took part in the expedition against the Sofas. He was discharged medically unfit in July 1902.
