Ernest Frederick Ellis enlisted at Glasgow for the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders on 3 December 1930. He served in France from September 1939 to 15 June 1940, and transferred to the Pioneer Corps in June 1941. He served with the Pioneers in Africa, Egypt, South Africa, and the Middle East, before joining the campaign in Italy. He re-enlisted for the Royal Pioneer Corps in November 1946 as Regimental Sergeant-Major, and was finally discharged in that rank on 7 February 1955.
