Two days later he, by his personal example and energy, kept his company together on his objective and captured many prisoners.'
D.C.M. London Gazette, 28 March, 1918 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. The enemy having made a determined bombing attack, delivered regardless of losses, entered our front trench. During the fighting all the bombs in his company's area having been expended, he, regardless of the heavy enemy barrage, collected bombs from both flanks. On his return, finding all the Company Officers had been wounded, he rallied the Company, and it was owing to his magnificent example and leadership that the line was held intact.’
