D.S.M., London Gazette ,14 November, 1944: 'For gallantry, skill, determination and undaunted devotion to duty during the landing of Allied Forces on the coast of Normandy.'

Sjt. Pilot R. S. Herring was posted to 104 Squadron on 7 July, 1941. His second mission, on 24 July, 1941, was to attack the German Battleship Gneisnau at Brest. Six Wellingtons of 104 Sqn took part and all six were hit in the fuselage and main planes by intense and accurate flak over the target. He completed five other missions including raids on Frankfurt, Cologne and Dortmund, but was lost on his seventh mission when Wellington W5486H failed to return on the night of 15 August, 1941. He was 26 at the time of his death and is buried at Becklingen, Soltau War Cemetery. Extremely fine (7)
