Mark Hamilton entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Assistant Surgeon in August 1842, aged 23. In May 1843 he joined the Racer and served for four and a half years aboard that ship in the Brazils, his only full sea-going commission during his 22 years of service. In April 1849 he volunteered for an Arctic Expedition but later heard that another officer had been accepted. He was appointed Supernumerary Assistant Surgeon aboard Britannia for service in the Crimea in September 1854, and landed for ‘service with the seamen’ on 11 November 1854. While he was ashore on duty he was transferred from the books of Britannia, first to Leopard and then to Royal Albert. After various further appointments he was placed on the Retired List, January 1865, due to increasing deafness, and died in July 1878. Sold with full career history.
