A Battle of Crete D.S.M. awarded to Stoker J. E. Appleford, Royal Navy, attached to H.M.S. Stag, and aboard Lighter S.D. 13 in her escape from Crete to Mersah Matruh

Distinguished Service Medal, G.VI.R. (C.KX.109437 Sto.1 H.M.S.) very fine £600-700

D.S.M. London Gazette 8 January 1942: ‘Stoker 1st Class Joseph Ernest Appleford. For outstanding gallantry, fortitude and resolution during the battle of Crete.’

The original Recommendation for Decoration states: “Was one of the two Stokers aboard Lighter S.D. 13 when she voyaged from Crete to Mersah Matruh, June 2nd-5th, carrying 75 army personnel. This feat was accomplished on the port engine only, and it is largely due to this rating’s skill and devotion to duty that the engine was kept running, and the journey successfully completed.” A further note below states, “Should there be any discrimination between Appleford and May [the other Stoker]. It should be in favour of Appleford who took the greater responsibility.” As a result Stoker May received a mention.
