D.S.M. London Gazette 10 November 1942: ‘For bravery and dauntless resolution while serving in H.M. Ships... Kenya... when an important convoy was fought through to Malta in the face of relentless attacks by day and night from enemy submarines, aircraft and surface forces: Temporary Acting Chief Petty Officer Joseph Frank Barker.’
The recommendation states: “Was quartermaster throughout the three days’ action and never failed in prompt and efficient response to an exacting and continual stream of helm and engine orders, failure in which, or incorrect or slow execution of which, would have jeopardised the ship.”
