Commonwealth (1649-1660), Farthing, undated [1654], in pewter, shield containing cross moline, initials tk encircled by wreath of roses above, rev. for necessary change, shield with Irish harp, rayed sun added to centre, 6.87g (BMC 373; N 2742). Very fine for this, very rare (£400-600)

Die-axis 6h; considerably superior to the Shuttlewood specimen (
SNC February 2001, MC 0319).

These coins, weighing a quarter of an ounce of fine pewter, saw a brief circulation, perhaps measured only in two weeks, at the end of April and beginning of May 1654 (
cf. BMC pp.94-5)
