James Thorn was born at Caddington, near Luton, Bedfordshire, and attested for the 8th Regiment at London on 25 March 1839. He was promoted to Sergeant in September 1853, to Colour-Sergeant in August 1856, and to Quartermaster-Sergeant in June 1857, but reverted to Colour-Sergeant in December of the same year. He was discharged on 31 July 1860, “Free to pension as an indulgence” at his own request, being in possession of 2 Good Conduct badges, entitled to prize money for Delhi, Medal and Clasp for Delhi, and Clasp for the Relief of Lucknow.
