INDIAN MUTINY 1857-59, 1 clasp, Central India (Capt. C. R. Stainforth, 4th Madras Cavalry) MajorGeneral Charles RoperStainforth (1827-1883) served in the suppression of the Mutiny in Bengal with his regiment, of which he was Interpreter and Quarter Master throughout, from September 1857 to December 1859, and also commanded a troop of the same during the whole period. He was employed in the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories and was present at the engagements at Irrowlea in Bengal on the 21st March 1858, and at Azimghur on the 27th March 1858; also in Bengal and Bundlecund until December 1859. He was appointed Commandant, 2nd Madras Light Cavalry, 29 September 1866, and Major-General, 1 July 1881.

Colonel Leslie Charles Hamilton Stainforth (1860-1940) was first commissioned, ex Sandhhurst, Lieutenant in the South Wales Borderers, 1 July 1881. He was appointed to the Indian Army in 1883 and posted to the 38th Dogras. He served with them on the North West Frontier, Waziristan, 189495, and again in 1897 and 1898, being present at the relief and defence of Malahand; relief of Chakdarra Fort; and operations in Bajaur and the Mohmand Country. He was mentioned in despatches for his services at the relief of Chakdarra Fort (Govt. of India General Order 1889/1897). He served again on the North West Frontier during the operations in Waziristan, 1901-2. He was appointed Commandant, 51st Sikh's in 1906 and promoted brevet Colonel in 1907. Colonel Stainforth returned to the U.K. in 1909 and retired in 1913. He returned to service under the War Office as Commandant, 29th (Reserve) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, 11 February 1915.
