James Hoskins was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in May 1856.

He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S.
Java in December 1825 and was advanced to Able Seaman in July 1833. Present in the Syria operations of 1840 aboard the Implacable, and in the Crimea aboard the Sanspareil, including the Sebastopol operations, he was advanced to Captain of the After Guard in the latter ship. Pensioned ashore from the Hastings in the summer of 1856, Hoskins rejoined the Service as a ‘Pensioner’ in the rate of Able Seaman aboard the Exmouth in July 1858, and enjoyed several more commissions prior to coming ashore for the last time in July 1866.
