D.S.M., London Gazette, 6 October, 1942, Petty Officer Noel Jeffrey, P/JX. 140947, 'for bravery, endurance and sustained devotion to duty in H.M. Shi ps Aurora, Avon Vale, Lance, Legion, Kingston, Penelope, and at Malta, during and after the passage of an important Convoy.’ The following citation is taken from the official recommendation for the award:- 'Noel Jeffrey, P.O., H.M.S. Kingston 'For courage, leadership and devotion to duty as senior hand of a party of ratings lent to H.M.T. Ancient as relief crew. During the series of very heavy air raids the tug was damaged by a near miss and began to make water fast. Even after she was beached she continued to flood. By working unceasingly all night P.O. Jeffrey and his party of four succeeded in saving the ship.'
