Albert William Alderman was born at Winchester, Hampshire, on 7 May 1892, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 12 March 1908. He served throughout the Great War aboard H.M.S. Agincourt, including Jutland, and joined the Royal Yacht Victoria & Albert in July 1919. He was still serving as a Seaman Rigger on the Royal Yacht at the time of the Coronation in 1937 and was awarded his B.E.M. as a Petty Officer at the Gunnery School H.M.S. Excellent.
