Charles Joseph Godfrey, who was born in July 1907, was commissioned into the Royal Engineers as a 2nd Lieutenant in October 1928 and was advanced to Captain in August 1938. Subsequently employed as a Temporary Major for the duration of hostilities, Godfrey remained a Regular Officer after the War and served as Commanding Royal Engineer in East Africa in 1953, during the Mau Mau emergency. He finally retired as a Lieutenant-Colonel in 1958.
