MILITARY MEDAL, G.VI.R. (916001 Gnr. R.A.), minor official correction to initial, otherria'ise extremely fine
M.M., London Gazette, 20 December, 1940. The following citation is taken from the official recommendation put forward by Lieut-Colonel G. F. Hopkinson, Commanding the Hopkinson Mission:- 'In the North Sea on the night 27/28 May this soldier displayed conspicuous gallantry on board the S.S. Marquis during an attack by a German motor torpedo boat. Gunner Isherwood was armed with a Lewis gun which he fired with effect against the enemy craft from an exposed position in the S.S. Marquis. During the whole of this time he was subjected to heavy enemy fire and on one occasion his gun was disabled by an enemy bullet. He recovered his gun and continued to engage the enemy craft until it was finally silenced, showing throughout a complete disregard for his own safety.' A contemporary newspaper cutting, accompanying the medal, describes the action with the title 'Gunner of 20 killed nearly all of Nazi boat crew-For half an hour he kept up a constant fire, killing most of the crew of the Nazi boat, which was disabled.'
