John Bartholomew was born at Clerkenwell, London, and enlisted into the Rifle Brigade on 12 November 1887. He qualified in ‘Electrio Telegraphy’ on 29 July 1896 and was subsequently employed for nine years in the Indian Telegraph Department, four years of which he was in sole charge of a station. He served with the Tibet Mission in 1904 (Medal), and in November of that year went to Aden where he remained until January 1906. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in October 1906 and was discharged at Bordon on 7 November 1908. Private Bartholomew appears in a group photograph, wearing his medals, in the Rifle Brigade Chronicle for 1908.
The only other Rifle Brigade recipient of the Tibet Medal was Captain A. F. Maclachlan, who served with the Supply & Transport Corps.
