Henry George Sutton was born on 26 May 1860, and originally commissioned into the Bedfordshire Regiment in 1879. He transferred into the Madras Army in 1881 and, at the time of his services in Burma, was acting as Quarter-Master to the 27th Native Infantry. By 1909, after several regimental transfers, he became unattached. Re-employed in May 1915 as a temporary Lieutenant-Colonel, Sutton saw service in France until the following August with the London Regiment. In January 1916 he assumed command of the 21st Battalion of The Rifle Brigade, departing for Egypt that month, a theatre in which he served until September 1918.
